19-21 January 2017

Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Institute for Education in the Arts (IKL)
Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse 3, 1070 Wien

This symposium and its exhibition is organised and held by PhD candidates in Fashion and Styles at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. They debate historical and contemporary questions concerning POLITICS IN FASHION AND TEXTILES. The exhibition is an artistic expression of the visual and textual materials that shall be presented as part of the symposium. The intention is to critically address various ideas relevant in POLITICS IN FASHION AND TEXTILES. The subjects being covered are: critical crafting, 3D printed lace dresses, the history of urban clothing in Iran, Turkish labour migration in satirical journals, the rose motif in terms of Austrian national sentiment, Kawaii Culture and the potential of shoes to revolutionise social norms. Keynote speaker, Emma Dick, Lecturer in Visual Culture and Fashion at Middlesex University, London will also facilitate a practice-based workshop on the 21 January where members of the public are invited to explore the ideas from the symposium and exhibition in terms of artistic research. Participants will work together to create a manifesto capturing the key points of discussion, building a framework for future development and dissemination.
